At this point.

The symbolic meaning for the serpent is "denial" it's abstract depending on the demands of a situation or state of mind. Physical discipline or discovery of identity through experiences.

Moses, Christ, Muhammed, Buddha and every other character described in the Books of knowledge, just as in autobiographies went through trials of the body, mind and soul, against set principalities that cage growth.
Ephesians 6:12 - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians - sounds as efficiency, or effectiveness - in business terms stands for qualitative analysis of events and situations as well as persons as a reference to understanding mind sets.

Going by the analysis of this quote it would be wise to say that generally we are struggling as people against the demands of our flesh and blood "blood here represents the engraved mindset "methods of bonding" that had been established by those who were put in charge of our lives and livelihoods in the past and to be born again is to remove oneself from that which serves no purpose I.e growing from the state of a child to that of an adult and then again becoming a child "innocence" a process of  cleansing . This is a process that confuses most, when everyone is shamed of their experiences how can one be renewed? Another question arises again "why grow back into being a child if one is told to grow up and be responsible?" In my understanding child to adult to child is in ones ability to renew the mind and state of heart every time an experience occurs, learning and relearning from anything and everything and everyone. As an adult I make deliberate efforts to discern/disseminate and share what's relevant for me now, and what's for tomorrow? I share anyway my memory will help store the plans and when the need arises I use what I lay down.

I am being impartial at this point as it helps me act/think.
